The utilization of regenerative raw materials in the energetic sector is discussed at present highly controversial in public.
In Germany rapeseed oil and its co-products as fuels are of great importance.
Volkswagen is working in this field since the beginning of the eighties. In this report the possibilities of the utilization of vegetable oils especially rapeseed oil in diesel engines are discussed. The use of rapeseed oil as a fuel in point of view of a mass manufacturer of passenger cars is only possible as result of a chemical treatment. One form is the blending of rapeseed oil with gasoil within the diesel production process. The other possibility is the conversion to rapeseed oil methylester. This fuel is well established in Germany.
All Volkswagen diesel vehicles built since August 1995 can be operated either on diesel fuel or with rapeseed oil methylester as well as a mixture of both fuels.
