Interdisziplinäre Untersuchung eines Achsschenkelbruches

This article describes investigations about for fracture of the steering of knuckle of a passenger vehicle, that was supposed to have occured suddenly and unexpectedly without any exterior influence. Upon the inspection by the technical expert it was noticed that there was no indication for exterior force on the damaged wheel suspension, previous damages not being evident.
Further examinations were carried out by the Institute for Materials Technology at the University of Kaiserslautern. The damage analysis by the means of metallographic microsections, ligth-microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed a fatique fracture of the component, caused by casting defects within the microstructure of the material.
