The visibility of road users is an important safety criterion. An automatic lighting control is to achieve driving with headlights uniformly adapted to ambient brightness.
For this purpose an automatic brightness control has been designed, built and tested in 25 test drives. The objective of the study has not been the switch construction but the determination and testing of performance requirements.
Result: it was found that an automatic low beam control satisfies the requirements specified. Assuming a performance efficiency (accident prevention) of 3,6%, a cost-benefit ratio of 1. With an automatic switch to control the low beams, which has been found to satisfy the requirements, the introduction of the mandatory use of daytime running would be superfluous.
