Der Begriff »closing speed« (closing velocity) wird im englischsprachigen Sprachraum oft verwendet, um die Unfallschwere zu erklären.
Als Beispiel kann ein Frontalzusammenstoß zweier Fahrzeuge mit jeweils 60 km/h dienen. Die »closing speed« beträgt dann 120 km/h.[1] In diesem Fall würde man im Deutschen den Begriff »Differenzgeschwindigkeit« verwenden. Zu berücksichtigen ist, dass die Geschwindigkeit eine vektorielle Größe ist. Nicht immer entspricht die Kollisionsgeschwindigkeit der »closing speed«. Offensichtlich wird (oder wurde) jedoch auch eine Annäherungsgeschwindigkeit darunter verstanden.[2]
Infrarot- oder LIDAR-Sensoren der ersten Generation der Fa. Continental, die drohende Auffahrunfälle im Stadtverkehr detektieren sollten, wurden als Closing-Velocity-Sensoren bezeichnet (2008, Volvo XC60).[3] Die entsprechende Komponente ist bei Volvo hinter der Windschutzscheibe verbaut und wird als »Closing Velocity Module« (CVM) bezeichnet.
